(Greece).- Massive investments, luxury projects, and international partnerships are transforming Greece’s casino sector into a Mediterranean hotspot for high-end entertainment tourism.

Greece’s casino industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by high-profile investments, strategic relocations, and a wave of new licenses. These changes are redefining the market landscape and drawing increased international attention.
While traditional casinos now represent a smaller slice of the broader gambling sector, the industry as a whole remains robust. In 2023, Greece’s gambling market recorded $31.5 billion (€29.2 billion) in wagers and generated gross gaming revenue of $2.8 billion (€2.59 billion). However, the real excitement lies in the country’s shift toward integrated resorts—multifaceted entertainment hubs that offer far more than just gambling.
From Casino Halls to Luxury Integrated Resorts
Following global trends, Greek casinos are evolving into integrated resorts, combining gaming with luxury hospitality, fine dining, shopping, and live entertainment. These projects aim to attract high-end international tourists, generate steady visitor flows, increase tax revenue, and bolster Greece’s image as a premier destination for luxury tourism. The next five years will be crucial in cementing Greece’s position as a top-tier Mediterranean destination for integrated resort experiences.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Athens: A European Landmark
At the forefront of this transformation is the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Athens, currently under development at the site of the former Ellinikon airport. Valued at $1.6 billion, the project is a joint venture between Hard Rock International (holding 51%) and Greek construction and energy firm GEK TERNA (holding 49%). Once completed, it will be one of the largest integrated resorts in Europe, setting a new benchmark for the Greek casino and tourism industries.
